THE FOUR POINTS
COLLINGWOOD
1. Captain Nick Maxwell is a significant omission for the Pies. A reckless high hit on Hawthorn's Paul Puopolo cost the skipper two weeks with the Pies declining to challenge the sanction at the Tribunal. The loss of the general in defence - who has no clear replacement given Tyson Goldsack has been reborn as a forward and is battling an ankle complaint - forces the coaches to reshuffle their line-up, which isn't ideal against the Eagles' tall forward line. Even then, they lose Maxwell's renowned composure and leadership in the back half.
2. Darren Jolly will be a massive in for the Pies based on the last time the sides met. Jolly missed the game in round 22 and the Eagles monstered the hit-outs 59-12 and the clearances 47-23 with Cameron Wood struggling as the main big Pie against Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui. Buckley admitted on Tuesday the addition of Jolly would be big given the way they'll be able to structure up in comparison to round 22, and they'll be hopeful Chris Dawes' omission in round 23 and return last week will see him fresher for the experience.
3. The Eagles might have won the most recent head-to-head between these two sides but the Pies have certainly had the wood over them at the MCG in recent times. The Eagles have not beaten the Pies at the ground in 17 years, with the last time being round two, 1995. That makes it five straight wins for the Magpies at the MCG, and seven of the past eight head-to-heads in total against the big birds.
4. It's been an emotional week for the Pies following the death of former teammate John McCarthy. The players were given time and space to cope with the loss on Monday and Tuesday, and were set to resume their normal routine on Wednesday morning. There are some Pies who were very close to the late Port Adelaide player, and how they react to what's been a tragic week - and the minute's silence that will commemorate McCarthy's life before the game - will be telling.
WEST COAST
1. Can West Coast take the devastating football it produced in the elimination final against North Melbourne on the road to the MCG? The Eagles are near unbeatable at Patersons Stadium, and they dismantled Collingwood at home in round 22, winning by 49 points. But they have a 5-5 record interstate this season, losing their two matches at the MCG, against Collingwood and Hawthorn. West Coast's best is frightening for opposition clubs, but it is yet to produce it this season in Melbourne.
2. The loss of vice-captain Beau Waters, who will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury, will be felt by the whole team, but perhaps most keenly by half-back Shannon Hurn. Waters and Hurn have formed a strong double-act this season, with at least one usually working free to launch the Eagles' attacks. Waters ranks No.1 at the club for marks and rebound 50s and has been shortlisted for All Australian selection. Hurn was superb against the Kangaroos, and he is a player the Magpies could look to shutdown with Waters sidelined.
3. Young star Jack Darling set the tone for West Coast's big win against North Melbourne on Sunday, and he is a player the Magpies may struggle to contain. In the Eagles' land of the giants forward line, Darling matched up on Michael Firrito and kicked three first-quarter goals. With Maxwell sidelined and Harry O'Brien out of form, it is hard to see Collingwood finding strong match-ups for both Josh Kennedy and Darling. The stage is set for Darling, who is building a reputation for performing in big games early in his career.
4. Leading into West Coast's round-22 clash against Collingwood, there were doubts around the Eagles' ability to contain the talented Magpies midfield. What ensued, however, was a midfield master-class from John Worsfold's men, who won the clearances (47-23), contested ball (142-109) and inside 50s (53-33). The form of Daniel Kerr, who was best afield that day, has remained strong, and the midfield talent is even and strong at West Coast. Importantly, the Eagles play a more accountable style than the Magpies produced at Patersons Stadium three weeks ago.
