The Ryder Cup is a biennial match-play golf competition between teams from the United States and Europe. It began in 1926 and since has taken place every two years, with the venues alternating between courses in the United States and Europe (usually the U.S. or Britain).

The Ryder Cup is administered by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour, who choose the American and European teams, respectively. The Cup once was contested by teams from the U.S. and Britain, but the field was expanded in the 1970s to include other European countries in the team.
The matches were fairly even in the first few decades of existence, but the Americans dominated for years after World War II. It was only after the European team was created and expanded that the event has once again experienced more competitive play.

1:09 p.m. – The morning Foursomes have ended in a tie for the first time since 1997.
1:07 p.m. – Rose and Poulter have knocked off Stricker and Woods. When Stricker was unable to convert from long-range at the par-3 17th, the two Brits had two to get down from the back fringe. Rose took a hybrid and chipped to 6 inches for the victory. Europe wins: 2 and 1.
12:57 p.m. – Ian Poulter is nothing if not clutch as he makes a 12-footer to save par at the 16th hole and preserve Europe’s 2-up lead.
12:45 p.m. –Stricker leaves Woods a short putt for birdie at the 15th hole after his partner’s drive strayed left but got a break when it hit a tree. Poulter had a 20-footer and missed the putt so Europe’s lead is 2 up.
12:30 p.m. – When Westwood missed a 6-footer for par at the 16th hole all Dufner had to do was hole one from 30 inches for the point. U.S. wins: 3 and 2
12:25 p.m. – A great comeback by the Americans was for naught as McDowell and McIlroy won the 18th hole. Snedeker hit his drive way left and all Furyk could do was hit the second through a chute back into the fairway. The American’s third shot checked up about 25 feet from the pin and when Furyk couldn’t convert, the match was McDowell’s to win. He made the 8-footer for the sand save and the crucial point. Europe wins: 1 up
12:13 p.m. – Westwood puts his tee shot at the 15th hole in the water just like McDowell did earlier. He ends up with a 20-footer for bogey and when it misses, he concedes the hole. Dufner and Johnson lead 2 up with three holes remaining.
12:09 p.m. – Woods holes a 12-footer to save par and cut into Europe’s lead in the final match of the morning. Poulter had a chance to halve the hole from 8 feet but he missed and Europe now leads 2 up heading to the back nine.
11:59 a.m. – While Mickelson and Bradley were celebrating up ahead, Furyk hits a brilliant approach to 4 feet at the 16th hole. Snedeker converted the American’s second straight birdie and suddenly Europe’s 3-up advantage is not more. The match is all square.
11:52 a.m. – Bradley poured in a 30-footer at the 15th hole that gave the U.S. the match after Donald missed his birdie attempt. Donald and Garcia had never lost in Foursomes – whether playing with each other four times previously or with another partner. Bradley’s caddy Steve “Pepsi” Hale, waved the flagstick in the air in jubilation and Mickelson ran onto the green to hug the Ryder Cup rookie. U.S. wins 4 and 3.
11:45 a.m. – Furyk, who ranks 166th in driving distance, went for the green at the 15th hole and nearly made it, the ball stopping just short on the collar. McDowell then found the water and the Americans went on to win with a conceded birdie. The win was their second in three holes and Europe’s lead is whittled to 1 up.
11:40 a.m. – Bradley slumped to his knees when he barely missed a 20-footer for birdie at the par-5 15th. His disappointment was short-lived, though, as Garcia couldn’t convert a 4-footer for par. The Americans are now 3 up on a European team undefeated in Foursomes.
11:38 a.m. – The ball needed that last revolution but Poulter holes a bunker shot for birdie and a 2-up lead on Stricker and Woods at No. 11. Rose pointed toward the sky as the ball tracked toward the hole and celebrated by drawing circles in the air.
11:26 a.m. — Bradley hits a great tee shot to 14 feet at the par-3 13th hole and is rewarded with a pat on the back from Mickelson. That was nothing compared to the celebration when Mickelson made the putt — Bradley grabbed his partner’s hand and pulled him close in golf’s version of a chest bump. The U.S. is 2 up.
11:16 a.m. – When Luke Donald lips out a 6-footer to save par at the 12th hole, Bradley and Mickelson own a 1-up lead.
11:12 a.m. – For the first time since No. 2, Snedeker and Furyk have won a hole from the Northern Irishmen with a clutch par putt from the veteran. Europe still owns a 2-up lead, though.
11:05 a.m. – Dufner drains a 12-footer for birdie to take the lead in the match with Westwood and Molinari for the first time. His partner Johnson celebrates with two emphatic fist pumps. Theirs is the only red on the board – Europe leads in two and one match is all sqaure
10:51 a.m. – Bradley makes another birdie putt for the Americans to halve the 10th hole. The match remains all square.
10:50 a.m – Dufner wins the ninth hole for the Americans when his 15-footer stops beside the hole, turns left and falls in as he walks toward the cup. The match is all square.
10:47 a.m. – Furyk had to take not one, but two drops with the U.S.at the 11th hole — one from a merchandise bag and the other from an electrical box. He flops it to 5 feet, though, before McDowell blasts 10. McIlroy makes the par-saver but Snedeker misses and Europe is 3 up.
10:38 a.m. – Bradley ignites the crowd when he holes an 8-footer for birdie at the ninth hole to square the match. Chants of "U-S-A. U-S-A" fill the air and Mickelson shows his approval with a fist pump.
10:35 a.m. – Tiger Woods misses a short putt for par at the sixth hole and suddenly Europe is 2 up in two matches.
10:31 p.m. – McIlroy and McDowell go 2 up in their match at the 10th hole after Furyk calls a penalty on himself when the ball moves slightly as he takes a practice stroke before hitting what would have been his third shot. He ends up chipping about 20 feet by the hole with his fifth and the hole was conceded.
10:22 a.m. — Europe is back up in all four matches after Molinari pours in an 18-footer at the seventh hole. He and Westwood have never trailed and are back to 1 up.
10:20 a.m. – Once again, Woods is wild off the tee. NBC announcer Andy North joked the “Lewis and Clark helped me find that one.” But Stricker recovers well, launching a shot over the trees and into the right greenside bunker. The two teams end up halving the hole with pars for the Europeans remain 1 up.
10:17 a.m. – McDowell converts a fifth birdie for the Europeans at the ninth hole. The two Northern Irishmen take a 1 up lead into the back nine.
10:07 a.m. – Westwood’s 4-footer to save par dips in and out of the hole so the Americans are all square in the third match. It’s the European’s first bogey of the day.
10:04 a.m. – Snedeker does what he does best – holes a 10-footer for a solid up-and-down at the par-3 eighth to square the opening match. The European bogey snaps a string of four straight birdies.
10:02 a.m. – The Europeans now lead in every match after Rose drains a 35-footer for birdie at the fourth hole.
9:55 a.m. – Donald holes a 5-footer for par at the sixth hole to put the Europeans 1 up. Meanwhile, Johnson makes a 4-footer to halve the fifth hole after Molinari makes his birdie from 10 feet. And at the seventh, Snedeker converts from 5 feet for birdie after McIlroy rolls his in from 7 to halve.

9:11 a.m. – Rory McIlroy chips in from behind the green at the fourth hole and squares the first match when the Americans can’t do the same.
9:07 a.m. – The U.S. wins the second hole in the third straight match as Dufner rolls in an 8-footer for birdie. That squares their match with Westwood and Molinari.
9:03 a.m. – All eyes are on Ian Poulter as he gets the final morning match started. His drive finds the fairway. Tiger Woods hits it long and left and the ball settles against the green fence.
9:01 a.m. – Chicago sports legend Michael Jordan makes his appearance on the first tee just prior to the start of the fourth match. He shakes Fred Couples’ hand and hugs U.S. Captain Davis Love, who taught Jordan to play golf when both were students at UNC.
8:58 a.m. – Westwood and Francesco Molinari win the first hole with a par after Zach Johnson is unable to convert from 5 feet.
8:55 a.m. – The second hole is being good to the Americans. Keegan Bradley just drained a 15-footer for birdie and the win, following the putt in with a fist pump.
8:50 a.m. – The Americans ended up winning the second hole in the first match of the day. The two par putts were so close they had to be measured. McIlroy missed his for par and Snedeker, who ranks first in strokes-gained putting on the PGA TOUR, made his from 5 feet to win.
8:47 a.m. – The third match has begun. Lee Westwood, playing in his 34th Ryder Cup match, finds the center of the fairway. U.S. rookie Jason Dufner puts his drive in the left fairway bunker.
8:45 a.m. –The chief referee denies McDowell relief. He chips 6 feet by the hole.
8:40 a.m. – The first hole is halved with pars. Phil Mickelson came up just short of the green but Bradley had a putt at birdie from about 15 feet, which stopped an inch to the left of the hole.
8:37 a.m. – We have our first disagreement of the Ryder Cup. McDowell is asking for relief from a sprinkler head but Furyk disagrees. The American is away, and he putts from 25 feet to 5 feet left. The referee is consulting with the chief referee.
8:35 a.m. – As Luke Donald, who has lived in Chicago for the last 15 years, hits the opening drive in the second match, the crowd yells “luuuuuuuuuuuuuke.” He gets a members bounce back into the fairway, too. Keegan Bradley, the second of three U.S. rookies playing this morning, hits first for the American and stripes it well down the fairway. He snatches his tee out of the ground with authority and satisfaction.
8:30 a.m. – McDowell chips to 6 inches for the conceded par. Furyk putts about 4 inches by the hole, and that is also conceded.
8:26 a.m. – Rory McIlroy, wearing a lime green “jumper” as they say in the UK or sweater as we say in the States, hits a towering shot over a pine tree that settles in the short grass above the greenside bunker. Snedeker, clad in a blue sweater and wearing a red cap, finds the green about 20 feet away.
8:20 a.m. – Graeme McDowell hits first and pulls his drive way left. Jim Furyk, wearing a stocking cap on his closely shorn head to ward off the cold, hits first for the Americans and he also hits way left.
8:14 a.m. – Brandt Snedeker walks down the stairs to the first tee in his first Ryder Cup clapping. He puts his finger behind his right ear as if to say, "I can’t hear you."

9:01 a.m. – Chicago sports legend Michael Jordan makes his appearance on the first tee just prior to the start of the fourth match. He shakes Fred Couples’ hand and hugs U.S. Captain Davis Love, who taught Jordan to play golf when both were students at UNC.
8:58 a.m. – Westwood and Francesco Molinari win the first hole with a par after Zach Johnson is unable to convert from 5 feet.
8:55 a.m. – The second hole is being good to the Americans. Keegan Bradley just drained a 15-footer for birdie and the win, following the putt in with a fist pump.
8:50 a.m. – The Americans ended up winning the second hole in the first match of the day. The two par putts were so close they had to be measured. McIlroy missed his for par and Snedeker, who ranks first in strokes-gained putting on the PGA TOUR, made his from 5 feet to win.
8:47 a.m. – The third match has begun. Lee Westwood, playing in his 34th Ryder Cup match, finds the center of the fairway. U.S. rookie Jason Dufner puts his drive in the left fairway bunker.
8:45 a.m. –The chief referee denies McDowell relief. He chips 6 feet by the hole.
8:40 a.m. – The first hole is halved with pars. Phil Mickelson came up just short of the green but Bradley had a putt at birdie from about 15 feet, which stopped an inch to the left of the hole.
8:37 a.m. – We have our first disagreement of the Ryder Cup. McDowell is asking for relief from a sprinkler head but Furyk disagrees. The American is away, and he putts from 25 feet to 5 feet left. The referee is consulting with the chief referee.
8:35 a.m. – As Luke Donald, who has lived in Chicago for the last 15 years, hits the opening drive in the second match, the crowd yells “luuuuuuuuuuuuuke.” He gets a members bounce back into the fairway, too. Keegan Bradley, the second of three U.S. rookies playing this morning, hits first for the American and stripes it well down the fairway. He snatches his tee out of the ground with authority and satisfaction.
8:30 a.m. – McDowell chips to 6 inches for the conceded par. Furyk putts about 4 inches by the hole, and that is also conceded.
8:26 a.m. – Rory McIlroy, wearing a lime green “jumper” as they say in the UK or sweater as we say in the States, hits a towering shot over a pine tree that settles in the short grass above the greenside bunker. Snedeker, clad in a blue sweater and wearing a red cap, finds the green about 20 feet away.
8:20 a.m. – Graeme McDowell hits first and pulls his drive way left. Jim Furyk, wearing a stocking cap on his closely shorn head to ward off the cold, hits first for the Americans and he also hits way left.
8:14 a.m. – Brandt Snedeker walks down the stairs to the first tee in his first Ryder Cup clapping. He puts his finger behind his right ear as if to say, "I can’t hear you."
